Squashed
Coffee
Table
who squashed your table
why does the center look squished
don’t you know things will fall
through that hole in the top?

A one-of-a-kind table, no doubt—this commissioned piece can live in just about any room because of its resemblance to art. Is it a table or is it sculpture? Yes!
When sketching ideas for this table, I thought about growing up in the eighties surrounded by chunky wood furniture from the 1970s. There was a solid yet comfortable feeling to the blocky styles from my memory. I went into a deep research dive, finding work such as armchairs by Tobia & Afra Scarpa and tables by Gae Aulenti that really resonated with this idea of heavy but soft and comfortable. The Italian designers of the seventies really nailed this style. The "Squashed Table" was created by drawing from historical precedents like these, but also from my memory—however accurate it may be—of the furniture I lived with during this period.
